Boats on the gorge, Famous shrines, Kagura dancing!
Located in northern Miyazaki,on Kyushu Japan, halfway between Nobeoka and Mt Aso..... Takachiho is an attractive mountain resort town and in my view a “
travel destination if you are touring around Kyushu.
The Takachiho Gorge is spectacular with the sheer cliffs of slow forming volcanic basalt columns cut by the Gocase River. You walk along a paved pathway through beautiful trees, offering lovely views of the Gorge along the 1 kilometre walk which eventually brings you into view of the 17 meter high Minainotaki waterfall.
There is a small center with restaurants, takeaway eateries, souvenirs etc, and from here you can walk down to the boat ramp where you can hire rowboats to take you down under the waterfall.
The short row gives you a close up view of the fascinating rock formations said to represent dragon scale. The emerald water, green trees and sheer grey cliffs are beautiful.
Bamboo Nigashi Noodle Bar
One restaurant in the complex was great fun .A noodle bar with Bamboo Nigashi Soumn – or flowing noodles.
You are seated either side of a long narrow table, which has a half pipe of bamboo running down the centre with water passing through. You are given chopsticks, and noodles are released at intervals which you catch with your chopsticks!
You could miss out...but they catch the “ones that got away” in a sieve and give them to you. Along with the noodles you are served a lunch box with a selection of pickles, meat, fish, tofu, rice etc It was a filling meal.

Shrines Near to Takachiho
AMANO IWATO - JINGA
About 8 kilometres out of the town is Amano Iwato Jinga (Shrine). Walking through you take a picturesque path through forest , beside the stream to the Amano Yasugawara Cave Shrine with fascinating stacked stone images representing ”the good and the evil” a Japanese man explained to me.
This Shrine is where the story told in the kagura dances originates. So is considered a very sacred Shrine in Japan.
Kagura Dance Display
Iwato Kagura dances (entry Y500) imitating Uzumeno's dance are performed every evening from 8pm to 9pm at the Takachiho-jinja Shrine in the town.
If you are there at the right time – 2-3 May, 21st – 23rd September and 3rd November you can attend the evening Iwato Kagura festivals .... 33 dances representing local folklore are displayed.
The legend tells the story of Amaterasu Omikami who hid herself in a cave that plunged the world into darkness, after her wicked brother Susano-o bullied her with his dirty tricks and the dances depict this story...and others.
Getting to Takachiho
Renting a car is definitely the quickest and easiest way to go! Otherwise you can check this link for detailed instructions.
Kayaking on the Gokase-gawa River
Near to Takachiho you can hire kayaks from Shizenya Kawajin Company (I think their website must be only in Japanese) and take them on the Gokase-gawa River. We met the kayak operator and transferred to his van.
We were driven down very narrow roads with stunning views over the river and surrounding farms...gorgeous with masses of red wildflowers and chestnut trees.
He took us onto the river which as seasoned kayakers was an easy but very pleasant kayak. After going down stream to a small waterfall........ we went up to a beautiful spot where we were able to swim....the temperatures were pretty cold ....around 11oC but it was very refreshing.
Our guide provided a hot drink and biscuits cooked up on his little gas burner. It was a very pleasant paddle in beautiful surroundings.
