Sovereign Hill Ballarat

Australia's Historic Gold Discovery Museum!

Sovereign Hill - Ballarat is only 100 kilometres ( 63 miles) and an easy drive from Melbourne .It is well worth taking a two day round trip to visit Sovereign Hill if you have the time................ especially if you are travelling with children.

You will see in vivid detail the history of the discovery of gold in Ballarat around 1851 and the resulting Gold Rush bringing people from all over in search of their fortunes. The Sovereign Quartz Mine extends this period to the 1880s.

With a Sound and Light Show reproducing the famous Eureka Rebellion and a working village .............Sovereign Hill is probably Australia’s greatest historic show. The village is set up to give a truly authentic feel to the Gold Rush days.

You really feel you have stepped back in time as you:

  • Encounter villagers dressed in clothing of the 1850’s
  • Pan for gold in the stream
  • Visit the many working workshops
  • A blacksmith
  • Crafts
  • The real Aussie leather hats shop
  • The candle maker
  • Jewellery
  • A bakery where the bread and cakes are cooked in a wood fired oven
  • Schools in action
  • Horse drawn carts
  • Live street performances
  • .............. and much more. Sovereign Hill truly is a fascinating experience.

“Blood on the Southern Cross Sound and Light Show ”

The "Blood on the Southern Cross Sound and Light Show " tells the story of Australia's only civil uprising - the Eureka Rebellion. a battle between gold miners and Government forces at Ballarat on 3 December, 1854.

This is the best Sound and Light Show I have ever visited. Starting outside you watch the story unfold so realistically you almost feel you are a part of it. You are then transported up to another section of the complex to see the second part of the show inside.

Using the same entry ticket you can return the next day to wander the village and participate in the many activities.

Visit the museum 13 metres underground on a tour of the Red Hill Mine. You see life-size moving "holograms" to represent Richard Jeffrey........a Cornish miner as he quite unexpectedly finds what was the biggest gold nugget ever found, the Welcome Nugget - weighing 69 kilograms.......it is now the second largest nugget in the world .

Stay in the Village Overnight!

To make things even more interesting they have now incorporated a package where you can actually stay over night in the village -The package includes:

  • Full period costume
  • Victorian afternoon tea
  • A tour of the township
  • An exclusive mine tour
  • A fabulous ‘Taste of Empire’ dinner
  • You will also be given time to experience all the Sovereign Hill activities including ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’.

This has to be a fairly unique experience................and a wonderful way to learn about the history of the 1850’s Gold Rush.

The Gold Museum

The Gold Museum is across the road from Sovereign Hill and has an extensive and valuable collection of gold nuggets, alluvial deposits, gold ornaments and coins.

There are also a series of galleries with new and fascinating exhibitions taken from the Gold Museum's huge collections and including touring exhibitions.

So Sovereign Hill certainly has plenty to keep the family interested. I can highly recommend this and would suggest it could well be a highlight of your holiday.
