Slovakia Food
Traditional Slovak Cuisine to Enjoy!

Slovakia food traditions have elvolved from the countries their history is tied up with. The Czech Republic and Hungary in particular. We were lucky, as Elenka was a great cook.Slovak meals eaten with the family reflect their strong family life.
Slovakia food traditions are partly about the social side of eating................sharing a meal with family and friends outdoors in the summer. We spent many evenings in the newly built gazebo shelter attached to the house. Built as a sun shade, unfortunately there was quite a bit of rain this year, but it did a great job of keeping us dry! Goulash ( originating from Hungary) is the traditional Slovakia food for outdoor meals, much as we would have a BBQ. Every thing is prepared outside and it is cooked slowly over a fire. The men sit around having a cold beer and chatting as it slowly simmers.
More Traditional Meals
Slovakia food is always blessed! Everyone starts their meal wishing those at the table Dobra Chut ( dobra hoort)...............the equivalent of Bon Apetit. Slovak food has some similarities with Czech food, but also many differences. It still has a tendency to be more fatty than we are used to, with a lot of bread, dumplings, pasta, rice, and plenty of potatoes. However, I thought they tended to have more vegetables in their diet than the Czechs. Chicken, pork and fish are the main meats. Schnitzel is also a regular meal. Potatoes in all kinds of recipes are a staple – pancakes, dumplings, salad..............!Below are some traditional meals you could expect to find in a restaurant and be offered in people’s homes. - Bryndzove Halusky,is rather like a sheep’s cheese dumplings and potato dough ,and eaten with bacon.
- Parene Buchty is found in both Czech and Slovakia and is a yeast based dumpling filled with cottage cheese or jam.
- Pancakes are eaten often with either jam or a delicious poppyseed filling. Elenka hand ground the poppyseeds.
There are also potato pancakes.- GateauxThey may not be traditional but magnificent cakes and gateaux were on the menu, especially with the older generation. Our daughter loved Elenka’s mother’s delicious cakes that looked like they had come from a cake shop! Apparently it was nothing to have a choice of about eight on Christmas Day!
Slovakia Food -Soup, Sheeps Milk and Shepherds Huts!
- Kapustnica is a sour cabbage and smoked sausage soup.
- Bean soup
- Goulash Soup
- Garlic Soup

Shepherds Huts are found in the mountains and offer simple, delicious food BBQ’d or spit roasted over an open fire. With their rustic wooden furniture, and decor they are a great dining experience. Sheeps milk is used more than in most countries and we were very fortunate to go and see a traditional sheep’s cheese maker. As we arrived I thought his little hut was on fire! The smoke was pouring from every crevice. It was of course the fire to smoke the hanging cheeses.

Traditional Slovak Drinks
Slivovice - is the traditional plum brandy ( firewater!) This has a very high alcohol content, so it extremely potent. It is usually downed in one gulp. Leaving you with a mouth on fire and the effects to live with! Some Slovaks make their own, and we have a couple of bottles of home made slivovice in our cupboard. Fernet is another popular drink. This has an unusual flavour and when our daughter brought a bottle home we thought you should drink it neat. Being rather reminiscent of cough mixture it remained relatively untouched. So we had some explaining to do when Lacko and Elenka arrived........with some more! It turned out we should have been drinking it with Tonic water.............which made a world of difference! We were very bemused on the three day holiday we had with extended family and friends. Every morning, before a mouth full of breakfast was eaten, the men had a brandy - Beer is popular and cheap.
- Wine is drunk with evening meals often. Slovak wine comes from the south.
- Coffee Coffee is a popular drink and very good.
