Northern Vietnam Lake Ba-be
Stay in a Longhouse, and take a boat trip on this beautiful Lake!
Northern Vietnam Lake Ba-be UNESCO Heritage Park is a 6 hour, 250 kilometre trip from Hanoi. Not the usual tourist destination, you can enjoy a view of Vietnam's farming lifestyle, in this beautiful setting.
Stay in a Long House - or Stilt House I poked my nose into the bedroom door and was surprised to see the bed, was actually a bed. For some reason I had envisaged we would be sleeping on a mattress on the floor. The wooden walls, simple wooden shutter, and two huge mosquto nets draped over the bed had a rustic appeal.
The rooms were set around the edge of one large open room, which in turn opened out onto decks running the length of the longhouse.Set up on stilts, the views over the valley were beautiful.
We were staying in a Long House – (Stilt house) in a small rural village in northern Vietnam Lake Ba-be Heritage National Park. It was a family affair, and they cooked delicious traditional Vietnamese meals and ensured we had a comfortable stay.
Northern Vietnam Lake Ba-be Views Beyond the stream , rice paddies, and fields stretched to the hills. Here we saw farmers working the fields with oxen pulled hoes.
A group of women worked together digging holes and erecting an animal enclosure, while others were hard at work in the rice paddies, using their simple hand tools.
The family of white ducks paddling along the edge of the stream clearly had the most relaxing life in this tranquil valley.
Boat Trip, Swim and Lunch for Relaxing Day Trip Boats can be arranged with the Long House owner. Trips out on this beautiful fresh water lake...actually three linked lakes, take you to a pathway to Thac Dau Dang - a small waterfall. A swim from the boat on the way back, and lunch at a simple restaurant overlooking the Lake, made for a most enjoyable day trip.
If you have time, you can also take a boat out to any of three islands, including Duong Grotto( with a grotto), and an hour further on, the larger, Dau Dang waterfall.
This northern Vietnam National Park has narrow winding roads, round steep hillsides covered in bamboo, and monsoon forest. As you drive through villages and small towns, you catch snapshots of the rural Vietnamese lifestyle.
It is a world away from the rush and bustle of Hanoi, and gives an insight into the lives of Vietnamese farmers who make up about 80% of the population. We did a circuit, arriving from one side , and travelling on back to the main road at Thai Nguyen City. If you have time you may like to visit the Museum of Ethnology here, which is apparently very good.
Getting to Lake Babe National Park
Northern Vietnam Lake Ba-be National Park is not easy to get to on public transport. It is best to hire a car/driver. It cost us $150 US for the 12 hour return trip. The driver stays too, so the cost includes his accommodation and meals. You can do this trip by motorbike, if you are confident riding in Vietnam. The young ones chose this option.
We arranged this privately, but there are tours through Hostelworld You might want to check these out if you are keen to do this trip.
