This Chiang Mai Travel Guide brings you information on the many delights to be experienced in this lovely historic city, and the surrounding countryside.

Located in northern Thailand tourism is one of Chiang Mai's main industries being one of Thailand’s most beautiful travel destinations.

Small enough to walk around, there is much to enjoy. The old moat and crumbling city walls add an ambiance and sense of history. Set on a river.... Chiang Mai is a pretty city, and a very appealing Thai cultural experience.

With fashionable shops, a night market, and many activities in the surrounding area you could spend several days in the Chiang Mai region.

Chiang Mai Weather

Chiang Mai has a cooler climate than the rest of Thailand with the average around 25oC and the hottest around 31oC. With humidity only around 70% this is very pleasant weather for your travel destination. Check weather for the season here.

Chiang Mai Travel Guide to Local Crafts

Considered the Craft Centre of Thailand, you can visit Hill Tribes including those of Burmese Karen descent to see craft products being hand made.

There are questions about whether those Burmese with the neck rings are being kept here against their will as Thailand tourism show pieces. So you need to decide for yourself if you wish to visit these particular villages. But there are other villages of Thai Hill tribes with lovely crafts, also well worth visiting.

  • umbrella making
  • screen printed silk
  • embroidery
  • bags
  • teak wood carvings
  • lacquer ware making
  • silver crafting
  • saa paper products
and other handcraft products. If you don’t have time to do a craft tour you can buy many items at the Night Bazaar in the centre of Chiang Mai or some of the other markets held on different days.

Cooking Classes in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai seems to be the main centre for Thai cooking classes with several cooking schools offering classes from a day to a 3-4 day intensive course. alt.Thai-Cooking-Class-Chiang-Mai

I thoroughly enjoyed a day class at the Chiang Mai Chocolate Cookery Centre......the first school set up in Chiang Mai. You can book through your hotel. We were picked up and returned to the hotel.

You come away with new cooking skills, a recipe book of delicious Thai meals and as you eat all you cook you will find you have no need of more food! We took our fried rice back to the hotel for an evening meal! It is a great way to take a break from sightseeing.

Chiang Mai Tours and Sightseeing

Here are Chiang Mai Travel Guide recommendations for some temples and Sightseeing Tours.

Wat Phra Thart Doi Suthep - a half day tour to the this most important temple in Chiang Mai, Wat Phra Thart Doi Suthep is to be recommended. It is situated up in the hills above the city. You can do a half day tour combined with a visit to a Hill Village, where you can buy beautiful crafts and hand made clothing. Many tours combine a visit to a Hill Village such as Mhong Village at Doi Pui alt.Wat-Phra-Thart-Doi-Suthep-Chiang-Mai.jpg

Wat Chedi Luang - this temple is located on Phra Pokklao Road and is easy to find, since the chedi is one of the tallest buildings in the old city. Damaged during an earthquake in 1545 it is still worth a look.

Wat Phra Singh - is perhaps the most venerated in Chiang Mai, after Doi Suthep. The the smaller Lai Kam worship hall behind main one is the star with recently restored interior artwork, giving visitors a wonderful view into the lives of the people of Chiang Mai people hundreds of years ago. Phra Singh Buddha image, found in the Lai Kam is considered the most sacred of Chiang Mai's Buddhas, having been brought to Thailand from Sri Lanka in the 1300s. alt.Small-temple-Chiang-Mai.jpg

Wat Suan Dok - dates back to the 14th century. The name of the temple means” temple of the seven spires, referring to the very unusual design of the temple's chedi. It is not a must visit unless you are interested in the bas relief inside.

Phu Ping Winter Palace you pass the palace en route to Wat Phra Thart Doi Suthep. There are tours through the palace when the royal family are not in residence.

Chiang Dao Cave - The cave complex extends up to 14km into Doi Chiang Dao Mountain. The two main caves Tham Phra Nawn and Tham Seua Dao are easily explored on your own , as they are have electric lighting. Both these caves contain many religious statues and sacred Buddha images.

To explore Tham Maa, Tham Kaew or Tham Naam caves visitors must bring or hire their own torches as there is no lighting. Oil lanterns and local guides are available at 20 baht per cavern. To explore the deepest recesses a local guide is essential.Admission to the overall cave is 5 baht.
