Cesky Krumlov

A Bohemian Fairytale Czech Town !

alt.Cesky-Krumlov-Reflection.jpg

If you go to only one place outside of Prague it must surely be Cesky Krumlov in Bohemia. Easily reached by train, this UNESCO heritage town, in the Sumava foothills is the fairytale town we see in children's picture books. This is a pictorial look at this very special Bohemian Czech town.

Cesky Krumlov is divided into two sections by the Vlatava river, you have the circular Stare Mesto on one side, the Latran quarter on the other. Since a huge restoration programme, this magical town has become a popular tourist destination, and it can get busy in the summer.

Cars are rarely seen, the narrow cobbled streets best suited to walking. You can browse the myriad of small shops, some with historical interest as much as for their wares. Garnets and gold jewellery , wooden toys, wonderfully detailed puppets, glass Christmas decorations and many other handcrafted Czech works of art are treasures to be found. Just waiting to become cherished souvenirs.

The Krumlov Castle is just beautiful with its sgriffito etched walls. This interesting architectural feature is the result of scraping the top white plaster layer to expose the black underneath, in intricate designs. It is seen on many Czech buildings.

The Zamek

Krumlovsky zamek in the Latran quarter features a huge courtyard. From here you will want to climb the Castle Tower for a picturesque 360degree view over the town. There are two separate guided tours of the Castle taking you to different parts of the castle.

The gardens accessed by a different covered make for a nice spot to enjoy a meal or an ice cream at the cafe.

Surprisingly, the Zamecke divaldo is part of the castle. This is a multi tiered viaduct. Apparently it is actually a Rococo theatre designed for comic opera.

We enjoyed sitting having a meal across the river, looking directly at this magnificent rococo structure, and watching the people – not the theatre it was designed for, but still entertaining. We also had a bird’s eye view of the kayakers on the river, who ended up in a swirl of water as they went over the small rapid. Many ended up IN the water !

Later we walked across the footbridge to Rybarska, and wandered the pathway edging the river. We had some gorgeous views back to the town, and ended up back at Namesti Svornosti - the main square.

The Stare Mesto or Old Town is a magical place with the ornate historic houses and buildings.

Historic Re-enactment

Looking down into the entrance of the Old Town we saw a re-enactment of days gone by. alt.Cesky-Krumlov-Historic-Re-enactment.jpg
